CHARTING A COURSE TO GREAT BUSINESS

For centuries, the mightiest business on Earth was the Sailing Ship trade.
Sailing traders generated personal fortunes and shaped the history of nations.

The Navigators and Pilots on these Great Ships employed hand-drawn charts of land, waters and winds to calculate the course and progress of the ship using the stars, ocean currents and the local signs. These charts were the keys that unlocked access to distant wealth.

On each chart was a directional pointer, called a "Compass Rose" (like these examples), that first appeared on 14th century Portolan charts, indicating how each chart should be positioned and read. Without a Compass Rose a chart was useless, lacking orientation and scale.
